Graphic Lamps by Delightfull

I love these floor, table and wall lamps based on different typefaces. There are some truly beautiful lights in their alphabet and numeral set. I think I need that slab serif ‘E’.

Delightfull, who are based on Porto, will be at Clerkenwell Design Week coming up next week in London.

Artist Statement

Two years ago, the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami devastated the Northeast region of Japan. As an Asian now living in abroad, I am most acutely made aware of the distance between myself and my homeland when natural disasters from back home flood the news channels. Whether it is a tsunami in Indonesia, a typhoon in the Philippines, or the recent disasters in Japan, these events stir both feelings of helplessness and distance with a great desire to contribute assistance in any way I can.

What was different about the Tohoku event was that the disaster, in a sense, made its way across the ocean to me. While much of the 5 million tons of debris from the quake sank into the Pacific, around 30% of it caught the ocean currents and made its way to the shores of North America. These object ranged from small, personal household items to fishing boats and sections of piers. There have been some heartwarming stories of the lost items being reunited with their owners, but the organic debris have also been a cause for concern for U.S. officials who are worried about the introduction of an invasive species to a totally new environment.

With this series I have documented some of these objects, along with the co-ordinates of where they washed ashore. It is interesting to me that the vast ocean, which at times makes me feel very far from home, can sometimes close the gap a little bit in surprising ways.

But at the time, women were censored out of the system, and people of color were censored out of the system, but that, to them, wasn’t censorship. Only if you question a white male and his work, then that was censorship.”

Typeforce 3 - Neon Sign Installation

A collaborative submission to a typographic based art show. Our concept was called “Turned On” and was about the stimulation and emotion that typography can evoke. We rigged up sensors that faded the levels of the custom illustrated and manufactured neon signs based on the viewers proximity to the sign. The piece got great reactions and had an awesome for the duration of the show.

“…well, I’d been drinking everyday for several years. In 2009 I tried to quit. So I stopped drinking for two days, and I got so sick that I couldn’t eat or sleep. But I still decided to try to go to work. I got so weak that I passed out in the BART station while I was waiting for the train. When I woke up, I was paralyzed from the waist down.”

“Oh man.”

“You want to know the sad part?”

“What’s that?”

“I’m still drinking. Because of the loneliness.”

“These movie posters for Pavilion are simply stunning. Caspar Newbolt succeeds brilliantly in “(…) capturing that feeling of the abstract, aimless ennui of what it was to be young, with almost no sense of responsibility at all”. The dreamlike images use transparency to great effect. In his excellent post on the IFP website Caspar somewhat mysteriously reveals that the imagery references Robert Zemeckis’s 1985 film Back to the Future. However he doesn’t want to spoil the details of the film by explaining the exact meaning of the various elements in each design. Seldom have I seen movie collaterals that have such a sensitive, poetic quality yet look perfectly mainstream. I realise I often use this term in a rather derogative way, but in this particular case it’s a compliment.”
